What key challenges and problems your family, ownership and management faces? : Given the sector that my family operate within, which is the UK health and social care sector, there are a few external factors that are currently affecting the industry, such as that of high and arguably unacievable regualtion, high staffing costs within a business model that does not allow for increase in funding, and staffing shortages which is linked to this, and brexit.
Which famous family business’s problems, tensions, conflicts and issues do you find the most fascinating and why?: Given the dynamic of family businesses, I find the interperosnal relationships between family members the most facinacting. This is because, being part of the business myself within a household that is solely focused on increasing the growth within the business, allows for a different dynamic to occur within family bonds. Having seen first hand how business problems can affect our family, I want to explore futher how it is possible to both lead a healthy family life, and the joy that can occur from that, to also being able to work side by side with family to lead our response to our common goal.
What lessons can we learn from the problems experienced by these famous family businesses? Share examples of how some of these families overcame their problems or failed because they faced to face up to their problems. Remember, problems, tensions, conflicts, etc can occur along family, ownership and management dimensions: The Barclay brothers are a real life case study on how doing business between family can lead to the breakdown in realtions between two people very close to each other. This rift ultmailty led the two brothers having to sell the Ritz London, and this family tension allowed for a split down the middle of the family, because of the want to move into differnet directions. This suggests to me that family businesses must have a common goal for those family members working within it. If that common goal is not shared by all family signed up to work in such business, then ultimalty, this will lead to failure.
