What key challenges and problems your family, ownership and management faces?
One of the challenges every business and especially - family business faces is nepotism.
In many cultures, it is the norm and even the goal to support relatives and friends through the provision of jobs and accelerated career advancement. But sometimes it can be challenging.
However, at a certain point in time, disagreements arose in my company. The introduction of a new digital system for accounting and warehouse database systems required changes not only in technical but also in the minds of employees. Some considered it possible to deliberately or due to character and age to hinder this process. The question arose: development with the times or maintaining good relationships.
I would like to note that such problems often occur in family businesses, which can be seen in the articles, an example in the link below:
Jaskiewicz, P., Uhlenbruck, K., Balkin, D. B., & Reay, T. (2013). Is Nepotism Good or Bad? Types of Nepotism and Implications for Knowledge Management. Family Business Review, 26(2), 121-139. https://doi.org/10.1177/0894486512470841
Your post provides a descriptive overview of the challenge of nepotism in family businesses, highlighting the tension between supporting relatives and friends while ensuring business development and professionalism. You mention a specific example from your own experience, where disagreements arose over the implementation of a new digital system, illustrating how nepotism can potentially hinder organizational progress.
However, your analysis remains somewhat myopic as it focuses primarily on the negative aspects of nepotism without delving into potential benefits or strategies for mitigating its adverse effects. While you provide a citation to support your argument, it would have been beneficial to offer a more detailed synthesis of the findings from the academic article you referenced, perhaps highlighting key insights or recommendations relevant to addressing nepotism in family businesses.
You alos lack depth in terms of analytical rigor, as it does not critically examine the root causes of nepotism or explore alternative approaches for balancing familial relationships with business objectives. Additionally, you could have added value by incorporating real-world examples or case studies of family businesses that have successfully navigated issues related to nepotism, providing practical insights for readers.
